School Safety Spectrum

School safety is complex and interdisciplinary. It covers multiple issues ranging from bullying and substance use to fights, bomb threats, and school attacks. It is therefore necessary to address the development of safe schools through a spectrum of strategies that include:

  • Prevention of problematic behaviors and incidents
  • Intervention with students showing early signs of problem behavior, and
  • Effective response for when incidents of harm or potential harm to the school community do occur.

Helping your faculty, staff, students, and parents understand the range of components to a comprehensive school safety plan is the first step.
