This part focuses on building a team structure for action planning and implementing a Comprehensive School Safety Plan.
Who needs to be on the team? Include people who, as a group, have the skills and characteristics listed below. Some members may have several of the noted skills, some may only have one or two. People you invite to the team do not need to have all skills, knowledge, and experiences; key will be that all skills are represented on your team. These skills and characteristics include:
- Strong technical skills, knowledge, or experience.
- High motivation for working on prevention initiatives.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good conflict management skills. Ability to adapt to change.
- Committed to a team philosophy.
- Ability to work together toward compromise and/or consensus.
- Understand and accept their team roles, functions, and responsibilities.
- Can respect diverse opinions.
Productive collaboration takes both purpose and skill to be effective; teams need to be clear about why they exist (purpose) and can create and implement a plan for getting it done (skill).

Successful teams require planning, good communication, and enough flexibility to allow easy transitions and changes to address new issues or to overcome barriers to moving forward.
