Part 1: Forming an Effective Leadership Action Team

Who needs to be on the team? As you consider members for your team, you’ll want to include people who, as a group, have the skills and characteristics listed below. Some members may have several of the noted skills, and some may only have one or two. People you invite to the team do not need to have all skills, knowledge, and experiences; the key will be that all skills are represented on your team. These skills and characteristics include:

  • Strong technical skills, knowledge, or experience.
  • High motivation for working on prevention initiatives.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A willingness to help.
  • Good conflict management skills. Ability to adapt to change.
  • Committed to a team philosophy.
  • Ability to work together toward compromise and/or consensus.
  • Understand and be committed to the goals of the team.
  • Understand and accept their team roles, functions, and responsibilities.
  • Can balance assertiveness with respect for the team’s process.
  • Can ask difficult questions.
  • Can respect diverse opinions.

Productive collaboration does not come easily. Most of us have belonged to a team where everyone got along, but nothing got done. Sooner or later, busy people lose patience with teams that do not seem to accomplish much of anything. Productive collaboration takes both purpose and skill to be effective; teams need to be clear about why they exist (purpose) and can create and implement a plan for getting it done (skill).

Part 1 begins our process of building our Effective Leadership Action Team (ELAT).
